Big Data, Data Science, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence: Where is the STATISTICS?
These have been the buzz words in the area of data over the last decade. The job market is full of advertisements for these types of jobs. So where is the statistics in all this? Are we as statisticians facing extinction as these other “disciplines” take over our jobs? What is our future as statisticians? Or should we jump ship and re-invent ourselves as one of these trendy professionals? I will attempt to discuss these matters, and hope to give ups some hope!
Biography
R. Nazim Khan (B.E., BSc (Hons), PhD) is a lecturer/consultant in mathematics and statistics at the University of Western Australia. He has wide experience in teaching, research and consulting. His main research interests are in biology, medicine and engineering. His other interest and passion is in teaching and learning, and he has published several papers in this area, and also presented at international and national conferences on teaching and learning. In particular, he is interested in the level of mathematics and statistics a student takes and how it impacts on their understanding and performance in other disciplines.
